Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a serious health problem in the Philippines. The lack of information and awareness only worsens this case. In celebration of National Kidney Month, here are tips to keep your kidney healthy and lower your risk of CKD.
Stay hydrated. Regularly drink water but don’t overdo it, just drink enough to keep you hydrated and help your kidneys function properly. Listen to your body, the color of your urine usually tells you if you are dehydrated.
Eat healthy food. Most kidney problems are caused by medical conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. It’s safer to practice healthy eating habits to control your weight and blood pressure. Avoid foods that are too salty or fatty.
Don’t smoke or drink too much alcohol. Try to stop smoking to avoid damage to blood vessels that decreases blood flow in the kidneys. Casual drinking is fine but try to limit the amount of alcohol you are drinking.
Slow down with OTC medications and supplements. Non-prescription pills can damage your kidney if taken regularly over a prolonged period. The same goes for herbal supplements and vitamins. They may be causing you more harm than good.
Exercise. Try to keep yourself at a healthy weight by exercising. The goal is to keep your body fit and avoid drastic weight gain which can cause serious health conditions.
Get a kidney function screening. This is advisable if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease.
