Tips to Avoid Breakouts

Dealing with persistent acne can be incredibly challenging, and healing your skin requires effort. However, while addressing existing pimples, you can also take proactive steps to prevent new ones from appearing, helping to break the seemingly endless cycle of breakouts.

1. Keep your face clean.
Wash your face regularly and properly to clear away impurities, dead skin cells, and excess oil. Use warm water, not hot, and opt for a gentle facial cleanser. Avoid harsh soaps as they can irritate already sensitive skin and worsen inflammation.

2. Use a moisturizer.
If your skin becomes too dry, it will produce excess oil (sebum) to compensate, potentially leading to pimples. Always check the ingredient list to ensure the moisturizer is fragrance-free and non-comedogenic before making a purchase.

3. Try over-the-counter acne products.
However, be cautious about overusing these treatments, as they can sometimes cause irritation and dryness. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions for use.

4. Use make-up sparingly.
During a breakout, it is best to avoid wearing foundation, powder, or blush. If you choose to wear makeup, opt for oil-free cosmetics that do not contain added dyes or chemicals. Look for products labeled ‘non-comedogenic’, which means they are formulated not to clog pores and cause acne. Make sure to thoroughly remove it at the end of the day.

5. Be mindful of the products you use on your hair.
Avoid using fragrances, oils, pomades, or gels in your hair, as they can transfer to your face and block pores, leading to irritation. Go for gentle shampoos and conditioners. Since oily hair can contribute to facial oiliness, wash hair regularly. If you have long hair, keep it pulled back from your face to minimize contact.

6. Avoid touching your face with your hands.
Refrain from touching your face or resting your cheek or chin on your hands. This can spread bacteria and further irritate already inflamed skin. Avoid picking or popping pimples, as this can lead to infection and scarring.

7. Limit sun exposure.
While sun exposure might temporarily dry out pimples, it can have negative effects on your skin in the long run. Frequent sun exposure can dehydrate your skin, leading it to produce more oil and clog pores over time. To protect your skin year-round, use non-comedogenic, oil-free sunscreen.

8. Properly feed your skin and stay hydrated.
Limit greasy and junk foods. Focus on incorporating more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet. Avoid dairy products and foods high in processed sugars which may contribute to acne. Dehydration can lead to increased oil production by your skin’s oil glands and can make your skin look dull while promoting inflammation and discoloration. Increase your water intake after exercise, during pregnancy or while nursing, and when you are in hot or humid environments.

9. Exercise daily.
Regular exercise increases blood flow to the skin, elevate skin temperature and improve skin moisture. To prevent irritation, avoid wearing clothes or using exercise equipment that rubs against your skin during workouts. Be sure to shower or bathe immediately after exercising to cleanse your skin and remove sweat.

10. Relax and take it easy.
Research suggests that stress may worsen pimples or acne. Reflect on what is causing your stress and seek out ways to address it.

11. Consider consulting with a dermatologist.
They can provide personalized product recommendations and advice on potential interactions between different treatments.
