Did you know that both animals and humans can get very sick when caught with rabies? Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease that spreads thru the central nervous system. It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal. While we take on all possible measures on rabies awareness and prevention, we should also consider the welfare of our furry friends.

Signs of a rabid animal

• general sickness
• problems swallowing
• excessive drool or saliva
• over-aggressiveness
• biting at imaginary objects (sometimes called "fly biting")
• appearing tamer than expected
• having trouble moving or even paralysis

Ways to prevent rabies in our fur babies

• make sure they get regular rabies vaccine
• keep them away from wild animals
• prevent them from wandering outside your home
• give them enough food
• regularly bathe them and clean their cages
• properly dispose of their waste
• spay or neuter them

If you’ve been in direct physical contact with any wildlife or unfamiliar animals, particularly if you’ve been bitten or scratched, you should talk with a healthcare or public health professional to determine your risk for rabies or other illnesses.
